Depending on the material, your roofing system can provide you with at least 20 years of exceptional weather protection. But eventually, you’ll need to have it removed and replaced with a new one. You’d think that the old roofing materials are destined for the landfill once they’ve reached the end of their serviceable life, but that’s not always the case. They can, in fact, be reused in a number of fun ways.
Doormats: Old asphalt shingles can actually be used as a handy doormat. Visualize what your doormat should look like. Hold that vision, and then – with their rougher parts facing down – assemble the shingles in that shape. Attach the shingles together using hot glue, and once that’s done, spray paint the smoother parts of the material.
Walkways: During your new roof installation, you should consider asking your residential and commercial roofing contractor to let you keep the old asphalt shingles. That’s because they can still be used to create a walkway. And in order to make that walkway sturdier, lay down the shingles as you would bricks.
Artwork: Those who like doing art and are looking for an alternative material to use as a surface should consider old clay roof tiles. Just wash off the dirt from the clay tiles, and wait for them to dry. Apply the primer to the material, and that’s it – you are free to paint on them whatever you like.
Reusing old roof materials not only gives you a fun and creative project to do, but also helps reduce the waste ending up in landfills. Keep this in mind if you’re planning to have your roof replaced this season.
