Is PVC Membrane Roofing Right for You?

Some roofing systems are usually flat and use one of three common membranes: ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM), thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). PVC’s main draw is its 20 or more years of estimated life. The durability and longevity of this material, however, comes at a premium as it’s easily one of the most expensive types of flat roofing membranes available today.

Despite this, many building owners are still choosing to use PVC membranes because of its many advantages. If you’re still on the fence about whether a PVC roof is right for you, here are a few tips.

Stronger Seals

You rarely need to repair PVC roofs. This is thanks in large part to its high strength and durability. The membranes are heat-welded to each other, creating a watertight seal that helps protect the rest of the roof from its number one enemy: water penetration. Its installation also doesn’t rely on tapes or adhesives because of the same reason.

Longer Lifespan

PVC roofs have the longest lifespans out of any types of membrane roofing. However, you can stretch its service life by a good one or two years with the right amount of regular maintenance. A PVC roof is strong enough not to need frequent repairs, but seasonal inspections and annual checkups can help you spot potential issues before they become serious.

Resistance to Common Problems

Lastly, PVC roofs are strong enough to withstand any additional construction on the roof, be it the installation of solar tubes or even extra air vents. The membranes are also designed to resist common problems that plague other flat roof materials. such as rot, fungi and high alkaline conditions from rainwater.
