3 Important Factors of a Successful Gutter Installation

Poorly installed gutters can’t function as intended. Even worse, they can become the main cause of standing water in your gutter system, which can later lead to flooding in your basement or damage to your home’s foundation.

 Gutter Installation

Correct gutter sizing and pitch and a knowledgeable contractor are the key ingredients of a successful gutter installation.

Accurate Sizing

The size of your gutters depends on your roof’s size and style. As a rule of thumb, bigger roofs mean you’ll need larger gutters. If you have dormers or a multi-tiered roof, your gutters should have a higher capacity to drain water effectively.

Roofers also have to consider the local rainfall rate. Generally, the faster and heavier the rain falls in your area, the larger your gutters need to be. Most homes are fine with 5- or 6-inch gutters, but they may require fewer or more downspouts and diverters.

Correct Pitch

Your gutters should have a slight slope to enable the flow of water toward the downspouts. If your gutters are incorrectly pitched, this can cause water to get stuck in your gutters or back up onto your roof. When this happens, you may need to manually drain your gutters. Otherwise, your home will remain at risk of water damage.

The general rule is to set a ¼-inch slope for every 10 feet of gutter. The gutter must pitch toward the nearest downspout. Furthermore, one downspout must be installed for every 20 to 40 feet of gutter.

A Dependable Contractor

Working with a knowledgeable and experienced contractor is also crucial to the success of your gutter installation. They should have a perfect understanding of how correct sizing and pitch can impact your gutter system. Make sure they pay attention to these details during the planning and installation of your gutters so that you can have peace of mind your new gutter system will be efficient.
